Wycombe Wanderers v Cambridge United

Wycombe Wanderers have fallen away from the automatic promotion picture and even out of the play-offs in the last month or so, and they welcome newly promoted Cambridge United to Adams Park in looking to arrest that slide. The U’s have had an excellent first season stabilising in the third tier under Mark Bonner, heavy favourites for the drop at the beginning of the campaign, but have very little to play for at this stage of the season, 13 points above the bottom four and 14 behind sixth place.

Cambridge have been running a bit hot to score 8 from 4.29 expected goals (xG) in their last four games and with top scorer Joe Ironside unavailable since mid January, the Chairboys will be hoping to produce an assured defensive display. Wycombe are winless in seven, the type of run that does not usually continue under Gareth Ainsworth, scoring nine in their last four games with a solid process despite the drop-off in results.

With plenty of attacking options to cover positions during the quick turnaround, Wycombe should have the minerals to get over the line and push themselves back on an upward trajectory. Be it Sam Vokes, Brandon Hanlan, Sullay Kaikai or Garath McCleary, Wycombe should be confident of stopping the rot in midweek.

Shrewsbury Town v Rotherham United

Shrewsbury Town picked up a very important 2-0 win over Burton Albion at the weekend, extending their cushion on the relegation zone to six points. In the process making the visit of Rotherham United on Tuesday evening a far less menacing prospect due to putting some points on the board.

Steve Cotterill’s men have really struggled in attack in the last few months and Saturday’s result was the first time they had scored more than one goal in 11 matches. The Millers have the bit between their teeth with the finish line in sight, having built a nine point cushion on third place with 12 matches remaining.

They are so strong defensively with lung-busting midfielders Dan Barlaser, Ben Wiles and Ollie Rathbone protecting the back three excellently. Rotherham have seen under 2.5 goals in nine of ten in League One and have kept eight clean sheets in their last nine league outings. The Millers are heavy favourites but an unders play does seem the more enticing option given the defence first approach of both of these sides.

Portsmouth v Oxford United

Oxford United have been League One entertainers for a long while now and Karl Robinson only seems to be becoming more attacking in his tactics. The reverse fixture ended 3-2 to the Yellows, with a both teams to score bet winning inside ten minutes at the Kassam Stadium. 

Oxford have scored in eight of their last nine, plundering 25 goals in their last nine League One encounters. Portsmouth have found the net in all of their last six, with both teams to score landing in five of those six and they have put in some enterprising attacking displays in recent weeks. 

Danny Cowley’s men have generated an average of 1.96 xGF per game in their last four outings and will have to push for the three points to keep their play-off hopes alive. With the likes of Marcus Harness operating in front of a partisan crowd on the South Coast, Fratton Park is one of the tougher away days in the third tier and the midweek floodlights could add to that cauldron effect.

Oxford have kept just two clean sheets in their last 12 and could be just as gung ho on their travels, looking to cement their position inside the play-off places.
