Chelsea v Everton Cheat Sheet
Chelsea v Everton
Things appear to be turning a corner at Chelsea, they have won 3 in a row in all competitions and they are one of only 2 English teams left in the Champions League. They scored 3 goals against Leicester last time out, the first time they have scored 3 since October 8th including a goal from Kai Havertz, which will give the Chelsea fans and Kai Havertz some much needed confidence. There is even more good news for Chelsea as a number of first team players appear close to coming back from injuries and may be available for a place on the bench in this match. Mount, Mendy, James, Aubameyang and Kante are all close to coming back from injury but it is possible Potter won’t risk them and will wait till after the international break to bring them back into the squad.
Everton have won 3 of their 7 matches under Sean Dyche so far, as many league wins as Frank Lampard had in the first 20 league games. However, all of Dyche’s wins have come at home with only 1 point from their 3 away games under his management. Everton’s biggest issue may be Calvert-Lewin’s injury, Dyche will hope he will be back after the international break but will have to put up without him in this match. Dyche has tried Simms and Maupay up front but he seems to have settled on Gray as his choice up front, especially after the win at Brentford.
Everton are not a team that have a lot of possession under Dyche and at Stamford Bridge they will surely sit back and try to soak up pressure. Since Dyche has come in they have averaged just 38.9% possession and against top half teams this average is just 32.75% possession. Chelsea have averaged a lot of possession since Potter came in, in only 1 of their last 11 matches have they had below 50% possession and that was against Dortmund in the 2nd leg. Enzo Fernandez is at the centre of everything Chelsea do and the Argentine has attempted 89.2 pass per 90 since joining Chelsea. He has only failed to reach 70 passes in in 2 of his 8 matches for Chelsea, at Southampton when he had 67 and against Dortmund when Chelsea were dominated in possession as they sat back and defended their aggregate lead. Everton will allow him time as he will drop very deep to get the ball to dictate play, he should comfortably surpass 70 or more passes.
Everton play counter-attacking football under Dyche with Demarai Gray have a lot of pace and dribbling ability attacking which can get them in good positions. Over the season, Everton have won 4.59 corners per 90 and since Dyche came in it has stayed at a similar level of 4.29 corners per 90. Dyche’s Everton have only failed to win at least 3 corners in 1 of his 7 matches in charge, away at Arsenal in the 4-0 loss. In his 7 matches though, they had 7 corners against Arsenal, 3 at Anfield, 5 against Villa and 5 last time out against Brentford. Chelsea have conceded at least 3 corners in 8 of their last 11 matches and have seen the like of Crystal Palace and Leeds manage as many as 7 corners against them. Chelsea are playing 3 at the back at the moment and if they go with that here there will be space down the wings for Everton to get the ball from which they can win themselves some corners.
Everton have averaged 10.2 fouls per 90 over this season, however since Dyche’s introduction they have conceded at least 11 in 6 of their 7 matches. Amadou Onana has averaged 1.83 fouls per 90 and is a key player in Dyche’s system. Onana has committed at least 2 fouls in all of his last 3 matches and 7 of his last 12 matches. Onana will be up against a lot of players that can draw fouls in this match. Enzo Fernandez draws 1.69 fouls per 90, Loftus-Cheek draws 2.16 fouls per 90 and Felix who floats into midfield spaces draws 2.50 fouls per 90. Away from home Everton are going to be very structured with players assigned specific players to pick up, if late to pick them up they will make fouls to stop any possible Chelsea chances. I expect Onana to make a couple of fouls in this match.
James Tarkowski was probably delighted when it was announced that Sean Dyche was joining Everton, his ex-manager had always got the best out of him and looks to be doing the same again here. Tarkowski is a tough defender who is not afraid to put a tackle in which sees him commit a lot of fouls. Tarkowski has averaged 1.11 fouls per 90 this season, however since Dyche has come in, he has committed a foul in 6 of his 7 matches and has committed at least 2 in 3 of these. It is obvious that his foul numbers are much higher since Dyche has come in and I expect him to make at least 1 foul in this match here.
