Sunday’s European Football Double Tips
Lorient v Montpellier
Montpellier will travel north to take on Lorient on Sunday with the Stade du Moustoir taking centre stage as both sides go in search of some much needed points.
Lorient currently sit 14th, one place below their opponents through the first six games of the season. Regis Le Bris’ side are back on home soil following their exhilarating 5-3 defeat at the hands of Nantes last weekend and will hope to stretch their unbeaten start at home to four matches.
Lorient have netted in four of their six matches this term and last week’s game demonstrated their attacking flair with midfielder Romain Faivre, in particular, showing some good form in the final third. However, there are clear defensive issues for the home side having conceded ten goals so far this campaign. Interestingly, if we look back to the end of last season, their last six competitive games at home have seen both teams score, encouraging signs for this selection.
Montpellier have already scored six goals in their three away games in the league this season and there is every chance they approach this game with an attacking mindset. Jordanian attacking midfielder Mousa Al-Tamari could prove to be one of the bargains of the summer transfer window, while a fellow new arrival, Nigerian forward Akor Adams, will provide a threat up top.
Both players have already scored three goals apiece for their new club and will provide the focal point of Montpellier’s offensive endeavours. In terms of the head-to head-between these teams, eight of the last 12 encounters have resulted in both teams finding the back of the net, so this certainly looks like an angle to focus on.
Expect a free-flowing game with plenty of chances and goalmouth action, and the both teams to score market catches the eye at a fair price.
Freiburg v Augsburg
The Europa-Park Stadion is the venue as SC Freiburg play Augsburg on Sunday, bringing down the curtain on this week’s Bundesliga action.
Freiburg have been short on goals having only registered five times across their opening five league matches, however they did beat Olympiacos 3-2 in their Europa League opener. Last season’s top scorer Vincenzo Grifo is yet to get off the mark in the league but did open his account at Olympiacos, providing a timely confidence boost.
Japanese international Ritsu Doan will provide the threat on the other flank in support of target man Lucas Holer and that front three should provide all sorts of problems for the opposition defence. The hosts haven’t lost against Augsburg at home in the league since 2014 and have won the last five consecutive meetings home and away, providing plenty of optimism for this selection.
Augsburg come into this fixture on the back of their second league victory last weekend against fellow strugglers Mainz. Despite going behind early on, and being reduced to ten men, Enrico Maaßen’s side battled on for a valuable three points. However, the Fuggerstädter really need to address their away form if they are to stave off relegation this season. Their record in 2023 makes for grim reading for their travelling fans as they are without a win in 13 matches (W0, D2, L11).
This includes this fixture last season when Freiburg comfortably prevailed by a 3-1 scoreline. The away side will travel without key Belgian midfielder Arne Engles, the youngster is suspended following his straight red against Mainz and this looks to be another difficult away game to navigate.
SC Freiburg are backed to extend their unbeaten run against Augsburg, adding to the away side’s never ending misery on the road. Home win.
