Group K Preview
Competing alongside DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia, Portugal are the firm favourites to top Group K, but with only three points needed for a strong chance of progression beyond the group stage, it’s all to play for.
Portugal and Colombia are likely to make up the top two, but depending on how things play out, the opportunity for either DR Congo or Uzbekistan to make history is there, ahead of what could be an exhilarating final-game clash.

🇵🇹 Portugal
The heavy group favourites, Portugal, boast impressive squad depth that far exceeds that of previous years, and you’d be a fool to rule them out of going the whole way. Under Roberto Martinez, they have an experienced international manager who plays an attractive brand of possession-based football. That said, a lot could rest on whether he has it in him to make the big decisions and adjust the squad as needed, without being held hostage by the more senior players.
By clinching the Nations League, Portugal asserted themselves as serious contenders for the World Cup, and they followed that up with a strong qualifying campaign. They secured their participation with a 9-1 rout against Armenia, and followed it up with a comfortable 2-0 friendly victory against the USA.
🇨🇴 Colombia
Having failed to qualify for the World Cup last time round, Colombia harbours dreams of replicating their remarkable run in 2012, and while a lot has changed since then, Néstor Lorenzo has undoubtedly reignited aspirations with his fluid, possession-based style of football.
Colombia finished in a respectable 3rd place during their qualifiers, trailing Argentina and Ecuador, who occupied the top two places. They picked up 28 points across their 18 matches, with James Rodriguez proving himself to be the same creative force of old, contributing seven assists. Luis Diaz was instrumental in front of goal, finding the back of the net seven times - a tally bettered by only Lionel Messi’s eight. Having also bagged 26 goals for Bayern this season, Diaz looks the most likely candidate to top the group's goalscoring chart.
Colombia followed their qualifiers up with confident, friendly victories against Mexico, New Zealand, and Australia, alongside a 0-0 stalemate with Canada. That said, back-to-back defeats to Croatia and France do raise doubts over just how competitive they can be against the world’s elite.
🇺🇿 Uzbekistan
Given that Uzbekistan played their first ever international match as recently as 1992, their qualification for the 2026 World Cup represents a truly remarkable achievement. It might surprise you to learn that their remarkable journey has been pioneered by none other than Italy legend Fabio Cannavaro.
Uzbekistan impressed throughout their round three qualifiers, finishing 2nd with 21 points, just two shy of group winners Iran. They managed six victories and three draws, and boasted the group’s best defence, conceding just seven goals across their 10 matches.
Interestingly, Cannavaro was not actually in charge during those qualifiers, only taking over afterwards as Uzbekistan looked to lean on his World Cup-winning experience ahead of the tournament. Since then, he’s managed five friendlies, recording four victories, albeit two of which were on penalties.
🇨🇩 DR Congo
Competing in their first World Cup since 1974, DR Congo’s stellar qualification playoff run seems to have been overlooked by many. En route to this stage, they dismissed Cameroon and Nigeria against all odds before beating Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff final. They set up in a 4-1-4-1 and are amongst Africa’s most defensively disciplined sides, having conceded just 3 goals across their most recent 10 matches.
DR Congo also demonstrated that they’re a force to be reckoned with during the Africa Cup of Nations, where they recorded 2 wins and a draw to progress from the group stage, before being handed a tricky clash against Algeria, which they ultimately lost in the final minute of extra time.
